In my book, Safe 4 Retirement: The Four Keys to a Safe Retirement, I examine the Four Percent Solution, which is a belief (and backed up by research and studies) that retirees can safely withdraw 4% from their balanced portfolios (read: need some stock exposure along with fixed income) each year and with adjustments for inflation, that account will easily last you 30 years (or more).
The financial planner who is credited with creating this 4% rule is Bill Bengen from Souther California. Although high profile studies such as the Trinity Study have shown the validity of this rule, Bill has been the first planner who has put it into play and built portfolios around it.
